Ray Jacques returns for hockey talk

Wednesday, February 08, 2006 - Bangor Daily News - Former University of Maine hockey captain Ray Jacques is returning to the airwaves.

Jacques had served as a weekly hockey analyst on the Eddie Andelman Show on WWZN 1500 AM in Boston for three years and will re-surface weekly with Andelman on a Boston FM talk station, 96.9, beginning next month.

The WWZN gig ended last October.

Andelman spent several years on WEEI AM in Boston, one of the nation's top sports talk radio stations.

"I love it. I really do. I have so much fun with it. It's a good release, too," said Jacques, who founded and runs the New England Schooner financial planning firm in Peabody, Mass.

"I love the game and this gives me the opportunity to bring more attention to it. I talk a lot about the college game: the speed of it, the work ethic, the heart. They leave everything out on the ice.

"The pro game is more measured," he added.

Jacques talked a lot about the NHL on the previous show, also. Renowned hockey writer Stan Fischler was on the show and Jacques said he spent a lot of time "defending the Bruins" on the air.

"Stan never liked the Bruins," explained Jacques, who added Andelman had issues with them, also.

He has never forgotten his roots and routinely plugs his alma mater.

"I talk a lot about Maine. I was covering the Hockey East Tournament last year and was doing some off-the-wall stuff. I was interviewing a BC student with my Maine sweater on. He was giving me crap about it," quipped Jacques.

Although he considers his radio gig a hobby, Jacques said he has to do his hockey homework because the callers are knowledgeable.

"I've got to know who's starting in goal for Phoenix [in case they get a call inquiring about it]," said Jacques. He has had the opportunity to co-host with such hockey notables as Ray Bourque, Bob Sweeney, Mike Eruzione and Bruins broadcaster and former Black Bear Bob Beers.

Jacques played at Maine from 1981-82 through the 84-85 seasons.

A speedy winger with a scoring touch, Jacques said "everything I've learned I've learned from being involved in sports," and he credits the late Shawn Walsh with teaching him valuable life lessons even though he had just one year with Walsh.

"He touched my life," said Jacques. "He told me you have to work hard but you also have to work smart. He said you not only need work on the areas you're good in, it's important to get strong in the areas in which you're weak." He said although Walsh had his share of enemies in the Boston area, he was also highly respected, as is current coach Tim Whitehead.

"I love what I do. People depend on me for their livelihoods," said Jacques. "But I'm not married to the business. I spend a lot of time with my family. And the hockey thing is important to me. I may get into scouting."

In addition to his radio gig, Jacques has also served as the director of the Junior River Hawks youth hockey association for youngsters ages 7-14 and he coaches his 11-year-old son Ray Jr.'s team.

Jacques, who met Andelman at a charity event in 2001, attends several Maine games each season and epitomizes how important the alums' support has been to the continued success of the hockey program.
